Medieval origins
The origin of the Sant Andreu cemetery dates back to the Middle Ages, when the parish cemetery of Sant Andreu de Palomar became too small. Starting in 1837, a new location was sought for the cemetery, which was finally located on the land of the Can Calç farmhouse, a quiet space very close to the Sant Andreu path in Horta and on a small hill sheltered from the torrent of Sant Andreu. In 1839 the new cemetery was inaugurated and blessed.
With the addition of Sant Andreu to Barcelona in 1897, the cemetery became municipal property. The current façade on Carrer des Garrofers dates from 1927, while the chapel was built around 1930.
Hebrews, Protestants and Catholics
One of the peculiarities of the cemetery is that it contains a Jewish enclosure with underground tombs and vegetation, following the Jewish tradition. In addition, there is an area reserved for Protestant Christian burials. In 2012, the original stone of the wall surrounding the cemetery was recovered.

The Sant Andreu Cemetery is a place of peace and tranquility, far from the bustling Barcelona. The cemetery occupies an area of about two hectares and is surrounded by a wall. It is divided into three sections: one for Jewish burials, one for Protestant Christians, and one for Catholics.
Inside there is a chapel and several tombs of prominent people of the city. Among them, the tomb of Paulino Masip, the first mayor of Barcelona after the Second Spanish Republic. The chapel is dedicated to the Virgin of Montserrat and was built in 1930.
