Monjuïc Funicular: A trip to the top of Barcelona

Since 1928, the Montjuïc funicular has been working tirelessly, connecting the city with the mountain and providing everyone with a quick ascent.

Memory of other times

The International Exhibition that was held in Barcelona in 1929 transformed the Montjuïc mountain and recovered it for the use of citizens. One of the many legacies that remain from that time is the Montjuïc funicular, the cable transport that was inaugurated in 1928 in order to facilitate access to the mountain.

This historic means of transport connects the city, from Paral·lel Avenue, with Miramar Avenue, where a large part of the sports and cultural facilities of Montjuïc Park are located.

In its origins, the funicular consisted of a second section, which reached the castle, but with the inauguration of the cable car this second section fell into disuse. Renovated for the first time in 1992, for the Olympic Games, it was the second renovation, carried out in 2005, that gave it the modern appearance it has today.

Make a mountain

The funicular works like a metro and its initial stop is at the Paral·lel metro station itself, where it connects with lines L2 and L3. The second and last stop, the Parc de Montjuïc station, is located in the mountain, on Miramar Avenue, which extends into Estadi Avenue, at a height of 80 meters above sea level and a short distance from the cable car. Montjuic. Some of the park's most important cultural facilities are located there, such as the Joan Miró Foundation, the Sant Jordi Palace or the Olympic Stadium. The walk is a pleasure.

Enjoy the panoramic views

From the Montjuïc funicular, tourists and visitors can enjoy impressive panoramic views of the city of Barcelona. As you ascend the mountain, you will be able to delight in the beauty of the city skyline, the Mediterranean Sea and the main points of interest in the area.

It is especially advisable to take the funicular during the afternoon, to be able to appreciate the spectacular sunset over Barcelona from above. In addition, at the Parc de Montjuïc station, you can easily access other means of transport that allow you to further explore the mountain and its attractions, such as the cable car or the tourist bus.
