Plaza de Masadas, an architectural jewel in the heart of Barcelona
Plaza de Masadas is located in the heart of the old Sagrera, in the Barcelona neighborhood of Sants-Montjuïc. This porticoed neoclassical square was built around 1876 and is named after the lawyer, provincial deputy and senator in the Cortes Pacià Masadas i Teixidó, who owned the surrounding land.
Plaza de Masadas is located between Calle del Coll, Calle de Monlau and Calle de Cortit, and maintains the rhythm of the old Sagrera. This square has a beautiful fountain in the center, surrounded by a pond, and a large number of trees that adorn it.
History of Masadas Square
Masadas square was built in the 19th century, in 1876, with the aim of urbanizing the area. The design of the square was inspired by the scheme used in the Plaza del Mercadal. The square was built by the owner of the land, the lawyer, provincial deputy and senator in the Cortes Pacià Masadas i Teixidó, who gave it his name.
In the 1950s, the Masadas square underwent a remodeling, in which the cobblestones of the square were replaced with tiles and some trees were added. This remodeling was carried out by the architect Antonio Bonet, who was also responsible for the remodeling of Plaça de Catalunya.
Tucked between the streets of Coll, Monlau and Cortit, the Masadas square maintains the rhythm of the old town of La Sagrera.
The Market Square
Arcaded square in neoclassical style, following the scheme used in the Plaza del Mercadal.
Built around 1876, Masadas square is named after the person who owned the surrounding land, the lawyer, provincial deputy and senator in the Cortes Pacià Masadas i Teixidó. He ceded the land to the City Council and it was his nephew, Josep Enric Coll i Masadas, who coordinated, with the City Council, the urbanization of the space. A covered market was installed. Outside, the peasants of the area sold their products in stalls. At the beginning of the nineties of the 20th century, the market, which was badly damaged, was demolished, and the square, restored, was left as an open space surrounded by the porches on which rest old residential buildings, that give the square the air of a town that it had always had.
The vintage toy market
Before, a fair for vintage toys was held, but now it has moved to the remodeled Plaza de la Assemblea de Catalunya. The fair is organized by the Barcelona Railway Group and takes place every first Sunday of the month.
