History of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau


The Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, located in Barcelona, ​​was founded in 1401 by the Count of Barcelona and King of Aragon, Martín el Humano. Since then, it has become a senior hospital institution in the Spanish State. During the Modern Age, the hospital was expanded and became one of the main medical centers in Europe. In the year 1900, the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner designed the new hospital building, which was expanded in the following years.

In 2009, the new building of the Hospital de Sant Pau was inaugurated, the work of the architects Josep Lluís Bonell, Jordi Barberà, Jordi Canosa, Josep Gil and Rius. This marvelous construction simulates a hand, with the main block, 36,000 square meters, hosting the ambulatory activity. Each of the fingers, which are dedicated to hospitalization blocks, add up to a total of about 47,000 square meters. The hospital building has a modern infrastructure that allows the treatment of complex diseases, as well as rehabilitation, diagnostic and therapeutic treatments.


With a history of more than six centuries, the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau is one of the oldest hospitals in Spain.

The center is run by the Board of Trustees of the Health Management Foundation, made up of the Generalitat, the City Council and the Archbishopric of Barcelona.
