Fabra i Coats: A Journey from Historic Industrial Complex to Cultural Epicentre
Barcelona, a city renowned for its unique architectural treasures and vibrant culture, is home to numerous historical and industrial buildings that are testament to its rich history. One such remarkable site is Fabra i Coats – an old cotton spinning mill, that has undergone a fascinating transformation, serving as an important cultural and creative hub today.
Historical Roots: The Industrial Core of Barcelona
The deep roots of Fabra i Coats are deeply embedded in the industrial history of Barcelona and specifically, the Sant Andreu district. Constructed in the mid-19th-century, this former spinning mill is characterized by its solid brick walls, large windows and semi-circular arches, all adding to its unique appeal. The structure's robust architecture stood as an epitome of the industrial construction of that time, with its multi-floored construction and rows of iron columns, resulting in expansive and flexible spaces.
Substantially contributing to the Barcelona's textile industry, Fabra i Coats began its operation in the late 19th century. It acquired its definitive name in 1903 following a merger between the Catalan Camil Fabra and the Scottish company Coats. This amalgamation led to the establishment of Hilaturas de Fabra i Coats, making it one of the most significant textile factories in Barcelona and the principal production centre for local residents.
Threading the Past with the Present
Signalling more than the work hours of its employees, the sirens of Fabra i Coats were also the rhythm of life for the local residents of Sant Andreu. At its peak, the company provided employment to more than 1,500 people, significantly contributing to the local economy and sustenance of many families.
Throughout its operational years, it adopted several progressive practices such as paid holidays, onsite nursery schools and healthcare facilities for its workers. By the early 20th century, Fabra i Coats occupied two industrial blocks, sprawling over 30,000 square metres, effectively symbolizing the industrial might of Barcelona.
Transforming into a Cultural Landmark
While the 21st century saw the decline of the textile industry leading to the closure of the factory, Fabra i Coats was far from fading into oblivion. In a stirring example of industrial reconversion, the city council procured the factory premises to repurpose it into a multifaceted cultural space. Today, the 'Can Fabra Centre' stands as the heart of this cultural landscape, housing numerous organizations reflecting the rich heritage of this industrial complex.
Akin to a Phoenix rising from its ashes, the former Fabra and Coats textile factory has been admirably transformed into an artistic-creation laboratory. Presently known as the Fabra i Coats – Creation Factory, it houses various centres such as the Contemporary Art Centre, Josep Bota social and cultural space, the Ignasi Iglésias Library, among others. These initiatives have turned the formerly industrial site into the pulsating heart of cultural and artistic endeavours in Barcelona.
Fabra i Coats Today
The former textile magnate, Fabra i Coats, now stands as a testament to Barcelona's dedication to preserving its past while steadily marching towards an inclusive and creative future. Serving as a beacon of urban regeneration, it carries its rich historic legacy, whole embracing a spirited new identity. Art and culture bloom in the same spaces where once cotton threads spun, creating a beautiful amalgamation of history and present, making Fabra i Coats a must-visit for anyone intrigued by Barcelona's rich culture and heritage.
