But although it may seem radically modern, this school has a long tradition dating back to the 18th century, making it the oldest of the design schools in Spain and one of the oldest in Europe. It was created in 1775 by the Barcelona Private Board of Commerce, and the first classrooms were installed on the upper floor of the Llotja de Mar, from which its name comes.
The goal was to train cartoonists to design prints for the textile industry, but the school grew very quickly and the studies expanded into other areas. This is how it became the most important factory for artists in Catalonia: Marià Fortuny, Damià Campeny, Lola Anglada, Joaquim Mir strong>, Joan Miró, Mercè Llimona and Apel·les Mestres passed through their classrooms, as well as other artists from all over, such as Pablo Picasso, who studied painting there before leaving for Paris.
