Discover Eivissa Square in Barcelona
Eternal village square
Known as Plaça del Mercat [Market Square] until 1907, Plaça d'Eivissa is located in the old centre of the Horta district and still preserves its traditional village feel. The old centre of Horta still preserves the character of the village it was until the late 19th century, when it was annexed to Barcelona. The current name of the square dates back to 1907, but it was previously called Plaça del Mercat (it operated as the municipal market from 1896 to 1951) and before that, Plaça del Progrés. The square has been an exception witness to the city’s modernisation: it saw the arrival of street lights in 1889, trams in 1901 and the metro in 1967. Eivissenca, by the sculptor Joan Centelles, watches the people go by from one of its sides.
The quimet of horta
The Bar Quimet, which opened in 1927, boasts one of the best sandwich menus in the city. For a long time it was known as the “parrot bar” because of Juanito, a parrot from Brazil that talked and sang, and became the star of the square.
Cultural and leisure activities
Plaça d'Eivissa is surrounded by a multitude of small shops, bars, restaurants and cultural activities. You can take a stroll through the Horta market, which takes place from Monday to Saturday, and visit the local shops and restaurants. The Horta Library is also located here, and there is a wide range of cultural activities, such as concerts, exhibitions and theatrical performances. The square is also the starting point for guided tours of the Horta district.
A place to relax
Plaça d'Eivissa is the perfect place to relax and take in the atmosphere of the district. There are several benches and tables around the square, where you can sit and enjoy the warm weather, while admiring the architecture of the surrounding buildings. There is also a playground for children, and the square is often filled with people playing chess or other board games.
Conclusion
Eivissa Square is a charming and vibrant place in the heart of Barcelona. It is the perfect place to relax, take in the atmosphere and explore the local shops and restaurants. Whether you're looking for a place to relax or a spot to explore the city's culture, Eivissa Square is a great destination for tourists and locals alike.
